Not long after the white man’s first rough shanties were erected on Australian shores a group of early settlers argued over the sitting of a neighbours “dunny” which he had located within a few feet of his neighbours fire or stove. One man drew a plan in the sand siting the offending structure away from the shanty and down the back with the vege garden and chooks- so out of consideration to all Town Planning was born in Australia.
It remains much the same today, basically planning is for the consideration of all and the protection of Australia as a whole. You may own land but if you wish to subdivide that land, build on it, install a dam, or use it for a myriad of other purposes, you must have Local Council Consent and in some cases consent from NSW Department of Planning or the Land and Environment Court.
And the man who drew the map in the sand some two hundred years ago…. he’s been replaced by a University graduate who has an in depth knowledge all the local and state laws and can advise you on what can be done and where.

In recent years, a strong trend has emerged of people moving to coastal regions, be it in search of a better climate, a pleasant living environment, or retirement. However, coastal development can place increasing pressure on infrastructure and sensitive environments and therefore planning for ‘sea change’ is crucial.
